Firstly I'd like to thank John Muir
for writing his book "How To Keep Your
Volkswagen Alive", if your looking down on this little website John, it's a
tribute to your incite and enthusiasm. If you haven't already bought this
book and you own or intend to buy an air-cooled VW, I strongly
encourage you to go and get a copy, it'll save you a truck load of dosh if
you plan to keep your Type 2 bus for more than a few months. Anyway that said lets move on...
The secret to understanding your Type 2 bay window bus is to forget everything
anyone's ever told you about how cars work. The bay bus is not a car and more importantly,
it's very different to most vehicles used domestically around the world.
So, lets start with steering. You know... you turn the steering wheel right
and the vehicle goes that way (you hope!). Your hands and arms apply a
hefty amount of force to the steering wheel, this is transmitted down the
hollow rod directly in front of you to the steering box,
the steering box changes the direction of the force. An arm then pulls and
pushes the tie rods and tie rod ends. This changes the direction of the bay bus.
Get it ? so the force from your upper body is flowing down through
the steering system and changing the Type 2 bus's direction.
The whole of the steering system is designed to work whilst in motion,
don't do the dirty on your VW bus and lug the steering wheel round at stand still, it eats
up your tires and puts strain on those tie rod thingies.
